Listed Building Consent: A Guide for Yorkshire Homeowners

Listed building consent is required for most works to listed buildings in Yorkshire. Here's what you need to know.

Listed building consent is required for any works to a listed building that affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. This includes not just external alterations and extensions, but also many internal works — stripping out original joinery, removing plasterwork, installing new services in historic fabric, and more.

In Yorkshire, there are over 30,000 listed buildings, ranging from Grade I (the most significant) through Grade II* to Grade II. The most common grade is Grade II, which represents around 92% of all listed buildings. Even Grade II consent applications require careful preparation and a thorough understanding of heritage planning policy.

Our architects prepare listed building consent applications regularly, working with Yorkshire's local planning authorities and, where required, Historic England. We understand the arguments that resonate with conservation officers and the design approaches that are most likely to gain consent. Our initial consultation for listed building projects is always free.
